SUMMARY:Prioritizing Equity in Energy: Energy Insecurity Working Groups Kickoff
DESCRIPTION:Join the Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance (SEEA) to learn about ongoing energy insecurity initiatives and opportunities to engage with a network of diverse professionals working towards reducing energy insecurity in the Southeast. In 2022\, SEEA inherited the Southeast Energy Insecurity Project (SEIP) from the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions at Duke University. Products of this project have included the publication of the Stakeholder Recommendations for Addressing Energy Insecurity in the Southeast with input from over eighty diverse stakeholder groups\, the development of a leadership forum composed of subject matter experts\, a webinar series to share best practices for reducing energy insecurity\, and a series of mini-grants to support energy equity initiatives across the region. \nJoin us for the opportunity to be part of Phase Two of this project\, the kickoff of working groups intended to revise\, upgrade\, and turn recommended solutions into actionable goals to reduce energy insecurity in the South. There are three possible working groups to engage with\, those focused on Awareness and Community Engagement\, Data Access and Improvement\, and Utility Solutions. We are eager to engage experts or those with a keen interest in supporting solutions such as developing a user friendly one-stop shop for eligible programs\, providing centralized applications for aid\, building educational awareness campaigns\, developing “data dictionaries”\, establish data sharing platforms\, including community participation in energy equity data\, implementing inclusive energy efficiency utility investments\, expanding non-energy benefits\, and pursuing energy efficiency and peak demand reduction. Our panel includes Chriscilia Cox with Suma Consulting and Commissioner Marilyn Hemingway with the Gullah Geechee Chamber of Commerce to discuss their work addressing energy insecurity by raising awareness and engaging residents in the Gullah community. \nRegister today! \n  \nSpeakers \n \nChriscilia Cox\, Suma Consulting \nChriscilia Cox is an Environmental and Public Health professional and Army veteran leveraging over 15 years of proven experience in managing sustainable ecological health programs\, supervising the development of environmental health policy\, and providing ecological health compliance within the Department of Defense. She founded SUMA Consulting LLC\, a Georgia-based consulting firm providing environmental management and sustainability. She has a comprehensive training background in public relations\, resource allocation\, and compliance with occupational health and safety laws and regulations. \nA native of Johns Island\, SC\, Chriscilia’s Gullah Geechee roots also extend along the coast of South Carolina from Florence to Charleston counties and include documented linkage from Africa. Her lineage has many civic\, business\, education\, and political family engagement roots within these counties\, West Africa\, and the Caribbean. \nChriscilia holds many certifications\, including being a specialist in waste management\, policy development\, and training. She maintains professional affiliations with organizations such as the Green Business Bureau\, the National Association of Cannabis Businesses\, and recently the Gullah Geechee Chamber of Commerce as the Chief Sustainability Officer. Chriscilia has been recognized as a top environmental leader\, advocate\, and innovative strategist to look out for globally from at least two national agencies. \n \nCommissioner Marilyn Hemingway\, Gullah Geechee Chamber of Commerce \nMarilyn L. Hemingway\, civic leader and entrepreneur\, is the founder and president of the Gullah Geechee Chamber of Commerce\, the Gullah Geechee Chamber Foundation and The Hemingway Group\, communications firm. \nAn advocate for the environment and clean\, renewable energy\, Marilyn founded the annual Gullah Geechee Environmental & Energy Conference hosted in South Carolina and Georgia with plans to expand to North Carolina and Florida. \nA native of Georgetown\, SC\, Marilyn’s Gullah Geechee roots extend along the entire coast of South Carolina from Horry to Beaufort counties and includes a long line of civic\, business\, education and political family engagement \nShe was recognized by the Post and Courier as “2020 12 African American Leaders to know in South Carolina”\, is a recipient of the SC African American Heritage Commission 2021 Herbert A DeCosta Trailblazer award\, the Conservation Voters of South Carolina 2020 Harriet Keyserling Community Advocate Award and the Georgetown NAACP Branch #5520 Leadership Award. \nIn 2022\, Marilyn received a presidential appointment to the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission. \n  \n  \n
